Typica is expanding their operation into the United States with their brand-new New York City headquarters. To celebrate, the company is hosting a week of cuppings, featuring in-person appearances from some of the producers and roasters behind the coffees on the table, as well as a community dinner party, and all the events are open to the public.
Started in Japan, Typica is an online green coffee buying platform that connects roasters to producers to directly purchase as little as one 60kg bag of coffee. The platform also doubles as an information repository for cafes and coffee drinkers who want to know more about the coffee as well as find out where they can purchase it. The company has since expanded to include offices in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Amsterdam, and now Brooklyn.
With their new home in the Dumbo neighborhood, Typica kicks off the proceedings on Monday, March 27th with a cupping at their NYC HQ. Taking place each day through Thursday, March 30th, the cupping is meant to provide attendees a “clearer idea of what TYPICA stands for,” per the website, including “a broad range from exotic micro lots to new crops fresh out of the farms.” Attending these cuppings will be some of the folks behind the coffees, including producers Peter Muchiri of Rockbern Coffee Group in Kenya and Biniyam Aklilu of Nardos Coffee in Ethiopia as well as a global set of roasters like All Day Roasting Company (Taiwan), Sloane Coffee (Romania), Raw Sugar Roast (Japan), and Liike Coffee (South Korea).
The extravaganza culminates March 31st with a community dinner, to be held at the West Room in the Nine Orchard hotel in downtown New York City. The event will feature producers, roasters, and the coffee drinking public to “share their passion and love for coffee in conversations that will be sure to transcend nationality, language and profession.”
All the events part of the Typica USA launch party are completely free to attend, but space is extremely limited. Spots can be reserved via a sign-up form on Typica’s website, where you can select which cupping and/or dinner you would like to attend. If more people sign up than there is space available, Typica will implement a lottery system to select attendees.
